Jawaharlal Nehru

Jawaharlal Nehru is the poetics of independent India. The name-Jawaharlal Nehru-   itself sounds synonymous with a rich cultural fabric woven by colourful thread of different religions, each blending to form a perfect amalgamation.  He is the greatest apostle of inclusion, democracy, secularism and modernity in India. He represents the finest alchemy of statesmanship.

Jawaharlal Nehru was always a dream, a hope and a beacon light for millions of people across the world. He conceived the unconceivable. His contributions- whether it is the Constitution of India or our strong institutional edifice- reflect extraordinary sensibilities and an amazing sense of imagination.Nehru always understood that democracy is not an end in itself. It should be pollinated into concrete goals and institutions, which will eventually lead to stability and enduring peace. That is why we call him ‘the architect of modern India’.

As The Guardian wrote in the Obituary:  to see Nehru is to get a glimpse of the blazing power that commands the affection and loyalty of several hundred million people in Asia…put it simply it is the power of a man who is a father, teacher, older brother rolled into one… The total impression is of a man who is humorous, tolerant wise and absolutely honest”.

In this current era, it is critical to reclaim the unparalleled legacy of Jawaharlal Nehru.  India is at a crossroads now. If the vision of a shared future is to be carried forward, we must seize every opportunity to take bold and decisive action to reverse the dominant trends engulfed by masculine nationalism and majoritarianism. We should affirm the need to define the country in terms of its essential pluralism, tolerance, scientific temper and modernity. The real tribute to Jawaharlal Nehru lies here. Nehru Centre for Social Research epitomises this vision.
